VALENTINE BAKFARK - The Hungarian Orpheus

Jacob Heringman (lute)

4.00pm, Sunday 5 August, 2007
Little St Mary's Church
Fantasias and intabulations by Valentine Bakfark (c1526/30-1576), interspersed with dances from lute manuscripts associated with the Baltic regions where Bakfark lived and worked for sixteen years in Polish service. Though little known today, Bakfark was highly celebrated in his own day, and his status became almost legendary. A Polish proverb warns: "Nie bierz po Bekfarku lutniej" - "Don't play the lute after Bakfark!"
Concert generously supported by the Early Music Network with funds from Arts Council England.
