HORTULUS CHELICUS

Judy Tarling (baroque violin) and Mark Caudle (cello) with Peter Holman (chamber organ)

4.00 pm, Sunday 26 July, 2009

Johann Jakob Walther (c.1650-1717) (not to be confused with the botanical artist of similar dates) named his book of violin music Hortulus Chelicus, 'a little garden of the lyre'. In the Preface, addressed to 'the Devoted Lovers of the Violin', Walther modestly describes his violin itself as the author, 'sparked by the repeated proddings of its admirers' into producing this book of 'pleasing melodies'. Exemplary baroque violinist Judy Tarling's Hortulus Chelicus concert also features music for violin and continuo by Handel and dall'Abaco, and Georg Muffat's great and only violin sonata.
