Cambridge Early Music Concerts 2010

MUSIC OF RENAISSANCE SPAIN

Students of the Renaissance Music Summer School, Philip Thorby and friends

7.30 pm, Friday 13 August, 2010

From the bawdy to the beautiful, from palace song book to grand motets, from viol and vihuela to shawm and sackbut - the music of 15th and 16th century Spain is full of dramatic contrasts of style and timbre. This concert will present some of the music studied during the summer school week, including gems from the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, the joyous Ensaladas of Flecha, vihuela songs by Mudarra, and sacred music for voices and instruments by Morales and Victoria.
Congratulations on a most successful and enjoyable concert.

The Renaissance summer school concert was a real, genuine blast, and follows the Florentine Intermedii one, and the Ludwig Senfl concert - another singular and brilliantly energising, joyous, memorable event. I know it's not just me because of things others said to me there. I love the exquisiteness of Spanish High Renaissance polyphony, but equally love the engagement and impromptu daring - and diversity and unexpectedness - of these 'student' concerts - people stretching themselves artistically and personally (and having a great time).

The standard generally was really high, creditably brought off. I like the more explicit format of study groups putting on their own thing. Really fantastic, and thanks.
