This programme demonstrates William Byrd's mastery in writing for the voice (through a wide range of styles) whilst focusing on works that have particular importance to Byrd's own beliefs as a recusant Roman Catholic in Elizabethan England. Included are familiar works - the Five-part Mass, Vigilate and Ne irascaris, Domine - and one that you almost certainly won't know, the incredibly haunting unpublished setting of O salutaris hostia.
The Mercian Consort is a versatile vocal ensemble made up of young singers drawn from across the UK; their first CD will be released later this year. The consort focuses on engagement with deeply emotional religious texts.
