Cambridge Early Music Concerts 2011

2011 HANDEL FESTIVAL

Our weekend festival on 1-2 October 2011 includes four concerts, Handel Mattins and Evensong services at Great St Mary's Church, a guided walk of Baroque Cambridge, pre-concert talks by eminent Handelians, and a Festival lunch and reception.

Throughout the Festival the Fitzwilliam Museum will be displaying manuscripts of some of the Handel Sonatas which will be performed on Sunday 2 October. BAROQUE CAMBRIDGE WALK

Hotel du Vin
Blue Badge Guide John Newnham leads a group of up to twenty people on a guided walk around Cambridge's historic centre, taking in both famous and little-known features, with special reference to Baroque architecture. The walk will last for 90 minutes, starting at the Hotel du Vin on Trumpington Street and ending at Pembroke College in time for Mark Williams's organ recital. The fee includes admission to colleges.

The eminent Handel scholar Ruth Smith looks at the English words that Handel chose to set, and probes his rivalry with his English counterpart Thomas Arne. Followed by a reception for Festival Season Ticket holders.

HANDEL'S VIOLIN SONATAS

Adrian Butterfield, leader of the London Handel Players and a distinguished baroque violin soloist, will speak about the music which he will be performing later in the afternoon, with particular reference to the manuscripts held by the Fitzwilliam Museum.
